Judge Eric M. Fancher, Sr. is a Criminal District Judge in the 10th Judicial Circuit in Bessemer, Alabama. He has been licensed to practice law for over 34 years and has served as a District Judge for over 20 years. Judge Fancher and his wife, Dr. Iris Fancher, have three adult children: Kyndal, William Bradford and Eric, Jr.
Judge Fancher has an outstanding reputation as an efficient administrator. His Service to the Bessemer Cut-Off Division has been remarkable in light of the case load. He has maintained no back-log of cases and has an extremely high level of efficiency in his court. He was instrumental in bringing the first Drug Court to the Bessemer Cut-Off and continues to preside over to this day.
Judge Fancher is highly motivated and brings a myriad of experiences to the bench. The fourth of eight children born and raised in Brighton, Alabama, Judge Fancher sought out leadership roles early on as a member of Boys State and as Vice President of his Junior and Senior Classes at Midfield High School. After working his way through high school and college as a waiter, Judge Fancher worked in banking, as a college instructor and as Talledega College’s Director of Financial Aid (the school’s youngest Senior Administrator) before commencing his legal career.
While a student at Miles College, Judge Fancher served as President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and President, as well as Vice President of the Miles College Student Government Association. After earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Judge Fancher began his legal studies at Miles Law School where he served as a member of the Delta Theta Phi Legal Fraternity and served as Vice President of the Miles Law School Student Bar Association. Judge Fancher earned his Juris Doctor degree and began practicing law after his admission to the Alabama State Bar in 1983.
Judge Fancher operated a private practice from 1983 until his 1997 appointment to the bench. During his 13.5 years in private practice, he served as an instructor at Miles Law School and as a Municipal Court Judge.
In 1984, Judge Fancher was one of nine charter members that signed articles of incorporation for the Magic City Bar Association. He also served as a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
Since joining the bench in 1997, Judge Fancher has been lauded as an honest, fair and extremely knowledgeable Judge. He has received praise for his fair and even-handed approach.
